General Summary of Duties:

Under the direct and immediate supervision of the surgeon, provides aid in exposure, homeostasis, and

other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out safe operation with optimal results for the

patient. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Demonstrates knowledge of operative technique related to the operative procedure in which he/she

assists.

2. Demonstrates the ability to assist surgeon in step-by-step surgical procedure.

3. Utilizing appropriate sterile technique, prepares and drapes patient for surgery.

4. Assists in transport of the patients into and out of the operating room.

5. Assists the Surgical team in rapid room turnover, as member of the team will assist in functions

necessary to include bringing equipment to the room as requested.

6. Assists in OR room setup and clean up. Helps procure and open supplies pre-operatively.

7. Sterilizes individual instruments for surgical cases as needed.

8. Assists in OB c-sections as needed.

9. Assists the anesthesiologist, as time presents, pre- and post-operatively. 

Other Responsibilities:

1. Holds confidential all position acquired information.

2. Adheres to WSMC "Code of Conduct."

3. Adheres to all WSMC and department specific policies and protocols, directives, quality

assurance/performance improvement, safety, environment, and infection control standards

appropriate to this position.

4. Demonstrates an understanding of and models the mission and core values of WSMC through

behavior and attitude.

5. Adheres to all hospital and department mandatory requirements and competencies.

6. Assists in the orientation of new personnel to the operating room suite.

7. Participates in staff meetings and/or reviews minutes and provides input into unit goals and

objectives.

8. Attends meetings and educational offerings as assigned.

9. Reports to charge nurse regarding assignments, breaks and lunch.

10. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as needed in compliance with principles of

Standard Precautions to reduce occupational hazard exposure.

11. Performs other duties as requested.

 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

1. Graduate of one of the following accredited training programs: Operating Room Technologists,

Surgical Assistants or recognized School of medicine with an ECFMG/U.S. certificate.

2. Two or more years of surgical assistant experience preferred.

3. Certified by the National Surgical Assistant Association on the Certification of Surgical Assistants,

the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist as a certified surgical assistant, or

the American Board of Surgical Assisting preferred.
