JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and guidance of the Head Chef, the Cook performs a variety of functions and tasks pertinent to the production, service, and distribution of food to patients, employees and for catering functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Able to read and understand oral and written communication in English.
  • Able to demonstrate culinary skills and knowledge of sanitation principles in large-scale food production. Culinary Certificate/training an asset.
  • Prior cooking/baking experience essential, 1 year previous Hospital Food Service Cooking preferred.
  • Certified Food Service Sanitation Certificates
  • Well groomed, pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Able to follow directions, work under time constraints and be creative in food presentation.
JOB DUTIES
  • Prepares from standardized recipes and following directions, food according to the tally count for patients and according to established forecasts for cafeteria within specified timeframes. Ensures that proper food service is provided correctly to patients, employees and catering functions making use of patient menus, recipes, garnishing, instructions and portion charts.
  • Prepares and serves food in a safe, sanitary manner ensuring all safety and sanitation procedures are followed. Ensures the HACCP program is followed carefully.
  • Carries out job responsibilities thoroughly ensuring all aspects of the job are completed as required..
  • Utilizes all products in a cost-effective manner and in a clean environment. Follows assigned cleaning schedules and procedures to sanitize area. Maintains proper handling and storage of goods according to the HACCP program.
  • Adapts quickly to the changing needs and requirements of a busy food service establishment, working in areas as needed. Cross-trains in various  cook positions and assists in the training and orientation of new staff. Seeks new learning experiences and is adaptable.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for all aspects of the job being performed. Works well with other coworkers in a team atmosphere and follows the directions of the supervisor or manager as needed.
  • Offers solutions, ideas and suggestions to improve work area and performance. Identifies and reports to the Supervisor, any unsafe work practices, malfunction of equipment, electrical safety or infection control concerns.
  • Maintains a good attendance record with a minimal number of call off, sick days and follow the department policy for notification.
  • Follows the schedule as posted and maintains punctuality. Demonstrates a willingness to come in or stay later as the need arises.
  • Responsible for attending annual hospital and departmental training sessions and meetings, including safety and disaster, evacuation, HIPPA, employee forums and others as required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and organize work properly, establishing priorities and exhibiting follow through.
  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze situations correctly to decide what to do and to take proper action. Demonstrates a positive attitude.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and in a pleasant manner with customer, and co-workers. Always is courteous and tactful demonstrating respect for different cultures.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers and supervisors as a member of the team and establish supportive and collaborative relationships.
